Best Things to Buy In August

With Tax Free weekend coming up, Back-To-School shopping isn't the only way you can save.

August is basically Black Friday in flip-flops. While everybody’s thinking about school supplies and pumpkin spice, retailers are quietly clearing out summer stuff — which is great news if you’re in the mood to save a little cash.

First stop: the closet. All the shorts, tanks, swimsuits and sandals they swore you’d “wear all season” are suddenly 25 to 80 percent off, and even the jeans and sneakers for fall are getting the back-to-school treatment. The longer you wait in August, the better the markdowns get.

It’s also prime time to upgrade your tech. Laptops, tablets, headphones — August is one of the cheapest months outside the holidays. The trick is checking what’s inside the laptop, not just the price tag; the biggest discounts usually land on the older, lighter-duty models. And if your state does those sales tax holidays, that’s a bonus round of savings.

Out back, grills and patio furniture are on the chopping block. Stores want that stuff gone before Labor Day, which means you can scoop up gas, charcoal and pellet grills — even the fancy ones — for hundreds less, and grab outdoor sofas, dining sets and fire pits for up to 70 percent off.

And if you’re in an organizing mood, August is when boring-but-necessary office supplies get exciting. Notebooks, pens, printer paper, folders, all the little things that usually nickel-and-dime you are suddenly 30 to 60 percent off thanks to back-to-school.

Sporting goods get in on it too. Retailers are gearing up for fall sports, so workout gear, running shoes and all the toys for summer fun — kayaks, golf clubs, tennis and pickleball gear — are seeing discounts up to about 50 percent.

So yeah, if there’s anything you’ve been eyeing for your closet, your laptop bag, your backyard, your desk or your workout routine, August is the month to quietly hit “add to cart” while everyone else is just complaining about the heat.
