Pittsburg Community Theatre is raising the curtain on a classic this weekend, and from the sound of it, this is one production you won’t want to miss.
Director Tony Sanchez stopped by to talk about PCT’s latest show, Oliver!, opening tonight at Memorial Auditorium. The beloved musical, based on Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist, brings a powerful story of resilience and hope to the stage—this time with a big local twist.
Sanchez is leading a cast packed with talent, including around 25 young performers ranging from kids to teens (and, as he joked, “anyone under 40 is a kid”). Despite the common warning to “never work with kids,” Sanchez embraces the challenge—and the energy they bring to the production.
And energy is exactly what opening night promises.
“Everybody’s going for it,” Sanchez said, describing the buzz that comes with that first performance. It’s a feeling longtime theatre-goers know well—and one that makes opening night something special.
But it’s not just the cast bringing the wow factor. This production features a massive 20-to-25-foot revolving set, a full 30-piece orchestra, and what Sanchez calls “some of the most incredible singers in Pittsburgh.” In other words, expect a full-scale theatrical experience.
