Second Cyclospora Outbreak
Because apparently one wasn’t enough.… there’s now a second Cyclospora outbreak popping up, across 5 midwestern states.
Health officials are still trying to pin down the source, but we’re talking thousands of cases nationwide, a few hundred hospitalizations, and now another cluster popping up across the Midwest. (Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and West Virginia.) Not exactly the summer trend anyone asked for.
This lovely little parasite—Cyclospora—usually shows up uninvited on fresh produce or in contaminated water.
There’s been some side-eye toward shredded iceberg lettuce, with Taylor Farms under investigation, but nothing’s been officially confirmed yet. One test even turned out to be a false alarm, so… still a bit of a mystery.
Symptoms? Think nausea, fatigue, and the kind of stomach issues that cancel your plans real quick. They can show up about a week after you eat something questionable—just to keep things interesting.
Good news: no deaths reported. Better news: it’s not really spreading person-to-person. It’s more about what’s on your plate than who you’re around.
So for now, maybe give bagged salads a cautious glance, rinse your produce like you mean it, and if your stomach starts sending distress signals… yeah, probably worth a call to the doctor.
Food And Drinks To Help You Get Through
If it hits, it can hang around for weeks if you don’t deal with it. So the move? Eat like you’re 5 years old again. Bland, boring, and weirdly comforting.
Start with the easy stuff—water, tea, apple juice, broth… basically anything that won’t argue with your stomach. Popsicles count, by the way, and honestly feel like a small win.
Then ease into the classics: crackers, rice, plain pasta, a sad little baked chicken, toast… all the beige foods. Bananas and applesauce are your friends here. So is plain yogurt if you can handle it.
And if you’re trying to stay hydrated but want something that feels like real food, grab things like cucumber, watermelon, grapes… light, simple, no drama.
It’s not exciting, but neither is sprinting to the bathroom every 20 minutes. So yeah… eat boring now, thank yourself later.
