Here’s the sweet spot: clothes under $100, school supplies under $50, personal computers (laptops, desktops, tablets) up to $1,500, software up to $350, and graphing calculators up to $150. In-store or online, doesn’t matter, and you don’t have to live in Missouri to play along.
There are catches, of course. Bling is not invited to this party: jewelry, watches, handbags, wallets, fancy belt buckles, scarves, ties, hair accessories, sunglasses, cosmetics – all still taxed. Same deal with sports gear and toys: bats, helmets, cleats, specialized shoes, games, radios, CD players, portable media players, headphones and earbuds – also taxed, even if you swear they’re “for school.”
And your home office makeover? Yeah, that’s on you. Desks, chairs, lamps, copiers, scanners, multi-function office machines, and any kind of phone are all taxable. One more thing: if you go over the price caps, you lose the exemption on the entire item. So that $105 jacket, $1,600 laptop, or $60 pile of school supplies? Full tax, no mercy.
