Was Instagram hacked?

So, apparently Instagram might’ve sprung a leak—though Meta swears it’s just a “technical glitch.” Meanwhile, cybersecurity firm Malwarebytes is out here saying, “Nope, that’s 17.5 million user accounts floating around the dark web.”

We’re talking usernames, emails, phone numbers—maybe even addresses—already up for grabs in some hacker’s shady online yard sale. Malwarebytes says it ties back to an Instagram API flaw from 2024. Instagram, of course, politely disagrees and insists everything’s fine. Totally fine. Nothing to see here.

Except users are suddenly getting password reset emails like it’s a new social media trend. Meta says that’s just “third‑party activity,” not a breach. Sure. Let’s call it that.

If you’ve got an Instagram account (so… everyone), maybe take a minute to change your password, switch on two‑factor authentication, and check who’s logged into your account. Just in case that “glitch” turns out to be more of a gaping hole.
