If your main personality trait is drinking coffee like it’s a full-time job you might actually be doing yourself a favor.
The American Heart Association just came out and said that up to five cups of plain coffee a day is generally safe for most adults, and might even lower your risk of heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes.
There is, of course, a catch, because there’s always a catch. This is straight coffee we’re talking about. No sugar, no flavored syrups, no “it’s basically a milkshake but I call it a latte” situation. Once it turns into dessert in a mug, the health halo kind of disappears.
They also point out it’s not just the caffeine doing the heavy lifting — coffee has other compounds that seem to help, which is why energy drinks do not get invited to this party.
So a few cups of black coffee? Probably fine. Maybe even helpful. Up to five? Still in the safe zone for most folks.
Which is great news, since you probably weren't planning on cutting back anyway.
