Back-to-School Anxiety: How to Calm the Chaos
By thom·August 7, 2026
Back-to-school jitters are one thing. But if a kid suddenly has mystery stomachaches, headaches, frequent nurse visits, or treats the school bus like it’s a getaway car, anxiety could be in the driver’s seat.
First, figure out what’s behind it. Bullying, trouble with classwork, friendship drama, or simply being away from home can all crank up the worry meter. And no, those physical symptoms aren’t necessarily an Oscar-worthy performance—stress can cause real aches and pains.
The goal is to acknowledge the fear without letting it run the whole show. Keep the school routine going when possible, do a few practice runs before the first day, and set tiny, winnable goals—say hello to one classmate, turn in one assignment, survive recess without becoming a playground hermit.
A small end-of-week reward can help, too. Think movie night or ice cream—not a full-blown hostage negotiation. And an “anxiety toolbox” with calming items, breathing reminders, or a family photo can give kids something steady to reach for when the day feels big.
