Cardboard Is "Crack" for Cockroaches

That stack of delivery boxes in the basement? It may be less “organized storage” and more “cockroach condo complex.”

Pest experts say cardboard is surprisingly attractive to roaches. They can eat it, drink moisture out of it if it gets damp, and hide inside all those little corrugated grooves. Basically, an Amazon box is an all-inclusive resort if you’re a bug with questionable life goals.

And because cardboard usually gets piled in garages, basements, or that one closet nobody opens unless a fuse blows, roaches can settle in unnoticed and invite approximately 400 of their closest creepy friends.

The easy fix: break down and recycle boxes sooner rather than later, especially if they’re wet or have been sitting around awhile. Keep food sealed, take out trash regularly, and clean up crumbs, because apparently roaches also enjoy a kitchen that offers a free buffet.

If you spot something skittering when you flip on the basement light, it may be time to call pest control. And maybe stop saving every box “just in case.”
