Laundry Drying Tips That Save Energy

Laundry is already a multi-act production. Nobody needs the dryer demanding an encore. If clothes are still damp after one cycle, the problem may be less “cheap dryer” and more “lint, crowding, and a towel wrapped around everything like a burrito.”

First, don’t pack the dryer like you’re trying to beat baggage fees. Clothes need room to tumble so warm air can actually get around them. Two reasonable loads can dry faster than one stuffed-to-the-gills load that needs three cycles.

Wool dryer balls can help, too. They keep towels and sheets from forming one giant, damp fabric blob, and they last much longer than disposable dryer sheets.

Also: clean the lint trap after every load. Yes, every single time. A clogged trap restricts airflow, which means longer drying time and a dryer that’s working harder than it needs to.

For the deeper clean, a cheap dryer-vent vacuum attachment can pull out the lint the screen misses. Check the vent hose and outside exhaust regularly, too. Just unplug the dryer first, or call a pro if taking apart appliance hoses sounds like the beginning of a bad Saturday.
