Products That Are Worth Buying Generic
By Thom Watts·October 8, 2026
Brand loyalty is sweet. Paying extra for a logo on aluminum foil? That’s a pretty expensive relationship.
Some things are worth buying generic, especially stuff that covers leftovers, goes under spaghetti sauce, or cleans the sink.
Store-brand foil handles everyday jobs. Grab heavy-duty if yours keeps tearing.
Butter, milk, canned beans, vegetables, rice, and pasta? All good places to try the cheaper option. Your cookies probably won’t demand to see the milk’s credentials.
Body wash is another possibility. Compare ingredients and pick a scent you like. Nobody’s checking your shower for designer labels. (At least we hope not.)
Same with multipurpose cleaners: check the directions and make sure they’re right for the surface.
And toilet paper? This is where you might proceed with caution. Try a small pack before committing to enough rolls to survive three presidential administrations.
The idea isn’t to buy the cheapest everything. It’s to stop paying extra where you can’t tell the difference. Save the brand loyalty for something that earns it.
