Smart Vacuum, Messy Marriage

A guy in Taiwan suspected his wife was cheating after he found a mystery toothbrush at their vacation home. Because apparently nothing says “uh-oh” like a toothbrush you didn’t buy.

Later, he checked the camera on their robot vacuum, because, apparently the Roomba has eyes now, and caught his wife with another man. He recorded it, sued them both, and won about 15 grand.

Case closed, right? Not even close.

His wife then sued him for secretly recording private activity. The court ruled that marriage doesn’t cancel someone’s right to privacy, so she won. He was ordered to pay nearly five grand and got five months in jail.

So, after all that, he may have still come out about 10 grand ahead… but with a criminal record and some very complicated feelings about smart-home technology.

The lesson: if your robot vacuum starts acting suspicious, it may be gathering more dirt than it’s cleaning.
