Time To Get Your Mind In The Gutters
By Thom Watts·October 15, 2026
Now that leaves and showers are falling, it's time to get your mind in the gutter. Literally.
Before the leaves turn your gutters into "autumnal slop," give them a once-over. Waiting until every leaf drops sounds sensible, until your house hands you a repair bill.
Look for drips where gutter sections meet. Worn-out sealant can let water soak the wood behind them. That’s a little fix with big-bill potential.
Check for sections pulling away from the roof, too. Gutters need to stay lined up, not freestyle where the rain goes.
And don’t forget the downspouts. During rain, check that water actually comes out the bottom. Nothing flowing, but water spraying from the joints? That could mean a clog.
Finally, watch for nests, bugs, or a squirrel’s winter pantry. Call a wildlife pro if needed.
Basically, check now, before the leaves hide the problems and the pests sign a lease.
