Tricks to Turn Around A Bad Day
By Thom Watts·October 7, 2026
Ever have a day where you spill your coffee, lose your keys, and suddenly your brain says, “Well, clearly my entire life is falling apart”?
Your brain apparently loves turning a minor inconvenience into a limited-series drama.
The trick is interrupting that spiral. Instead of “Today is awful,” try “The last twenty minutes were awful.” No need to give one lousy moment custody of the whole day.
Get up. Take a walk. Change rooms. Step outside. Breathe slowly, and make the exhale a little longer. Find something funny, even if it’s how dramatically you’re handling your missing keys.
And don’t pressure yourself to become a ray of sunshine. Getting back to “OK” counts.
If the day’s beyond salvaging, eat something, shower, and get some sleep.
Tomorrow doesn’t need you solving today at eleven-thirty tonight. That’s not problem-solving. That’s overtime for your anxiety.
