"Shriek-flation" Takes A Bite Out of Halloween Candy
By Thom Watts·October 19, 2026
Halloween “Fun size” candy is getting smaller, but the price isn’t.
They’re calling it “shriek-flation.” The Halloween candy gets smaller. The bill still draws blood.
Take Hershey’s dark chocolate assortment. Apparently, five ounces left the party without saying goodbye. That party bag dropped from 29 ounces to just under 24, with the same $20 price tag.
And Reese’s miniature cups? Even they’re getting frisked on their way out. Their big bag went from 40 ounces to about 36, while the price climbed.
Candy makers point to rising cocoa, shipping, and production costs. Consumer advocates note we’re also quicker to notice a price hike than years past.
So the bag still says “party size.” It’s just a smaller party… with a steeper cover charge. The kids get the sugar rush. You get mugged by a peanut butter cup.
