World Dog Surfing Championships (Video)

So picture this: last weekend, Northern California hosted the World Dog Surfing Championships, where the crowd didn’t just cheer — they literally barked.

You had everything from tiny spaniels to big labs riding the waves in Pacifica, just south of San Francisco, getting judged on how long they stayed on the board, the size of th

e wave, and basically how chill they looked doing it. It’s the 10th year for this thing, and they’ve turned it into a full-on dog day: pet adoptions, fundraising for animal charities, the works.

The dogs showed up dressed for the part — colorful life vests, standing ready on their boards while their humans helped line them up with the perfect wave. Every time a pup nailed a ride, the beach went nuts.

My favorite story is Rusty, a Miniature Pinscher from Huntington Beach. His owner, Sophia Sadlowski, just wanted some cute surf pics when he was a puppy… and then he refused to get off the board. She walked him to the beach, stuck him on a wave, and boom — instant surfer dog.

Rusty competes in the small-dog and tandem contests, rocking a green life jacket with animal print and a shark fin, plus goggles that make him look like he’s training for the Dog-lympics. He was in his first competition at four months old — and now, both he and Sophia are cancer-free. So yeah, it’s silly and fun, but also kind of inspiring… with extra dog hair.
