How to Avoid the Labor Day "Break-Light Bonanza"

Labor Day is coming up, which means the open road will be full of people trying to enjoy a long weekend just like you.

AAA says Thursday and Friday will be the big traffic nightmares. If you can swing it, get moving before 1 Thursday afternoon, before noon Friday, and before 10 Saturday morning. Sunday is expected to be relatively calm — a rare moment when the highway might actually act civilized.

The drive time windows to avoid: Thursday from 2 to 7, Friday from noon to 8, Saturday from 1 to 5, and Labor Day Monday from 2 to 5. In other words, avoid afternoons unless you enjoy brake lights as scenery.

One thing you shouldn’t skip…a vehicle once over. With Heat advisories expected through the holiday weekend, broke down on the road side is NOT where you want to be. Before you head out, check the tires, battery, and fluids before you roll out. AAA helped more than 400,000 stranded drivers last Labor Day weekend, mostly flat tires, dead batteries, and other mechanical betrayals. Pack water, snacks, jumper cables… and lots of patience.
