Simple Decor Swaps To Cool Your Home
By thom·August 18, 2026
Are you decorating your way to a hotter home? Turns out, some of the décor may be helping the heat settle in and get comfortable. Turns out, your décor may be quietly turning up the heat.
Dark paint, black furniture, and deep-colored rugs soak up sunlight like a parked car with black leather seats. Stylish? Absolutely. Cool to the touch? Not so much.
Those “cooling” synthetic sheets may also be pulling a fast one. Polyester and microfiber can trap heat and moisture, creating what can only be described as a clammy little sleep situation. Cotton, linen, Tencel, or bamboo viscose are better summer roommates.
Heavy velvet curtains, incandescent bulbs, and wool rugs can also add to the cozy-but-why-am-I-sweating vibe. Swap in lighter, sheer window treatments, LEDs, and a breathable jute rug for the season.
Basically, if the house feels like it’s wearing a wool sweater in August, it may be time for a few decorative wardrobe changes.
