Google Plans Massive Mosquito Release

Google is asking permission to release up to 32 million mosquitoes in California and Florida.

Which sounds like the start of a villain origin story… but it’s actually meant to help.

The idea is to fight stuff like West Nile, Zika, and dengue by releasing male mosquitoes that have been… basically sabotaged with a natural bacteria. They mate, the offspring don’t survive, and over time the mosquito population shrinks.

And since only female mosquitoes bite, the pitch is: fewer bugs, fewer bites, fewer problems.

This is all part of a Google project that’s been quietly buzzing along for about a decade—because apparently they got bored with just running the internet.

The EPA is reviewing it now and taking public comments through Friday, so technically… the fate of 32 million mosquitoes is in committee.
